What is Personal Power Anyway?
I went through much of my early career as an actor feeling scared, uninformed and intimidated. Back then actors didn't have the internet to inform us. For goodness sakes, we barely had cell phones in those days.... (I know... this is really aging me...) It was a bit like groping around in the dark, relying solely on word of mouth, industry papers and the occasional tidbit we might get from our managers. There were very few seminars available regarding the business side of the business and even less concerning personal power.
Of all the people in the world, actors need to know more than most how to create and sustain a base of confidence and personal power. The nature of the industry requires it. There are some wonderful resources out there now, email newsletters, seminars, classes and courses that can help align actors feel more empowered in business than ever before. This is great news, and ultimately personal power all has to start within...
So what is personal power and how can you get it? The opportunity you have as a human being, let alone as an actor, is to find the part of yourself that is on a 'higher plane'. What I mean by that is the area of you that trusts your unique worth and the things that are deeply important to you. It 'gets' what you are here to create through those things. Whatever your beliefs are about the universe, when you explore and really know your values and what you want from your life on the planet, you can live through the powerful knowing of that.
To find your power you have to make some commitments to yourself. These include the following:
~ You explore your highest values, the elements of life that are really important to you, and separate them from the ones you were told 'should' be yours.
~ You commit to being centered in the truth of who you honestly are, even when you're afraid of judgment from others.
~ You remember that you always have choice in every situation.
~ You treat yourself as a really good friend, especially when you make mistakes.
~You learn ways to create healthy boundaries for yourself and do that while being present and as kind to others as the situation allows.
~You let the past be the past and take responsibility for your present reactions to that past.
~You are expressively grateful for the good in your life.
~You decide that your intrinsic nature is to be capable of vast expressions of love, faith and creativity.
You are in one of the most highly competitive businesses in the world. There is a challenge to being an actor beyond getting roles and that is remembering that you're not in a race with anyone else. You are simply here to have fun and be the most resourceful you can be.
Basically, true personal power comes out of love (esteem) and trust (confidence) in oneself and in the process of life. When you trust yourself and know your unique worth you can relax and be open. When you're in your power, you don't attempt to have power over others, you move toward the possibility of power with. You encourage other people's inner strengths and self- knowledge and you inspire them to live out the truth of their uniqueness. This has to come out of the knowing that your journey is between you and your higher self. This higher self understands the vast abundance in this universe and knows that there is more than enough room for everyone to be happy and successful. The only real power that exists is the power of good. When you remember this you're liberated into a place where everything you desire is possible.
Wishing you joyful, confident travels!
